Virtual reality gaming moves into mine safety training - September 2020

Mining companies are adopting virtual reality (VR) to make safety training immersive, cost-effective, and memorable. Anglo American, in collaboration with Pretoria-based STS3D and motion capture developer Vicon, developed a world-first VR stope to train miners in real-life blasting scenarios.

STS3D has already implemented six VR walls in South Africa, combining lifelike experiences with motion capture to simulate harsh mining conditions. These solutions are revolutionizing mine safety training by blending technology with human-centered design.

Anglo American Platinum's Amandelbult Training Complex VR Stope - May 2020

The VR Stope is part of Anglo American's commitment to Industry 4.0, transforming mine training into a safe, cost-effective, and impactful experience. Future updates will expand its capabilities to include ventilation testing, gas safety, and rock strata control.
